The third grade social studies curriculum included Maps and Globes, Economics, studies of Ancient Mali, Greece and Rome, the early Explorers, Montecello and Thomas Jefferson.
Students worked in cooperative learning groups to create vocabulary posters, as well as using technology to research the units.

Economics Posters
Students worked in a cooperative group to choose an economic term we had studied and create a poster to hang in our classroom. The posters contained: the word, a definition, real world examples and drawings to help them remember and understand the term.

Explorers Postcards
After studying important explorers including Christopher Columbus, Ponce DeLeon, and Christopher Newport, students chose an explorer and created a postcard as if they were the explorer writing back to the King or Queen who had financed the exploration. They were really able to get creative with this project.

Famous Explorers SongsTo help students remember the facts they had learned about the famous explorers, I taught them a song about each explorer. The rhyme and rhythm helped audio learners to connect better with the material.
